Why book a band

I once spoke to a groom and asked him why did he book us.

He told me that he had read many post-wedding blogs, and the common regret he kept reading was that they hadn't booked a good band. He then made hiring the best band possible  his priority.

A bride who booked us told us that she had been to half a dozen weddings of friends over the last twelve months, and they had all used either DJ's or ipods. What distressed her was that people weren't even staying until the end of the reception. When we played at her reception, the venue actually had trouble getting people to leave at the end of the night.

Recomendations and referrals are your best way of sourcing a great band. Any band can pay to have their name at the top of Google. Any band can pay to have great advertising material, but recommendations and referrals are always the best indicator of what they are really like on the event.

Ask people who go to a lot of weddings. These people include photographers and hospitality staff, or wedding A-listers.

Social Proof

What is "social proof"?

I first encountered the term in Neil Straus's book, "The Game", a book about pickup artists. Social proof refers to relying on others around you to indicate whether something is valuable or not.
For example, you walk into a pub on a Saturday night and see a band playing in a full room, everyone having a good time. You therefore make the assumption that they are a great band, and they will make your wedding reception  "happen", because the room is full of people enjoying themselves. The assuption that they are a great band is an example of "social proof". You are not basing your judgement on the band's performance or their appropriateness, you are basing it on the people around you and their emotional reaction.
That's the basis behind all marketing. For example, you have seen so many images of skinny people laughing and having a great time while drinking Coca-Cola, that you make the assumpton that Cola-Cola must be a valuable drink.
Or, your friends on New Year's Eve wants to book Jellybean Jam, because they are expensive and unavailable. That's social proof that they are the band to hire.
Anyone who is on television can charge double, because of social proof. (If they are on TV, they MUST be good).
Most of the time, people have no idea of what's good or bad, they just run with what everyone else is reacting to. That's "social proof".
